Five employees of Macmahon – two Australians, a South African and two Nigerians – have reportedly been kidnapped by gunmen in Calabar. Their driver was shot dead during the abduction.

South African, Australians kidnapped in Nigeria

The hold-up, in which the driver was also shot dead, happened in the Akpabuyo district near the capital of Cross River state, Calabar, at about 07:00 (06:00 GMT) on Wednesday.

All five were workers with Australian mining and engineering giant Macmahon, which was contracted to cement major LafargeHolcim in the state, police commissioner Jimoh Ozi-Obeh told reporters.

South African kidnapped in Nigeria – DIRCO not officially informed yet: report

“The police are currently working with the Nigerian Navy to ensure that the victims are released unharmed‚” the policeman added.

DIRCO spokesperson Nelson Kgwete said the department was not officially contacted about the incident.

“We have not been officially contacted by the ambassador in Nigeria of any kidnapping. All that we have heard so far is from media reports like everyone else‚” Kgwete said.
