El Salvador says Romanian consul dies in suspected homicide

The honorary consul serving as Romania’s diplomatic representative in El Salvador has died in a suspected homicide at his home in San Salvador, authorities in the crime-ridden Central American nation said on Sunday.

The body of honorary consul Ricardo Emanuel Salume Barake was found bound and gagged at his house in a wealthy part of the Salvadoran capital and investigations were continuing, a police spokeswoman said.

The details about the death of the honorary consul are going to be clarified in the judicial investigations conducted by local authorities, said a release of the Romanian Foreign Ministry.

The ministry also expressed the hope that those responsible for the act will be identified in the shortest time and held accountable before justice.

FMLN Mayor in El Salvador Murdered in Suspected Gang Attack

A mayor in El Salvador has died after being shot by alleged gang members in his municipality of Tepetitan, marking the second killing of an official of the ruling FMLN party in suspected gang attacks in less than two weeks, local media reported Sunday.

Guillermo Mejia, mayor since 2012 of the town of Tepetitan located nearly 40 miles east of the capital San Salvador, died in a hospital in the neighboring town of San Vicente on Saturday after being shot in his home, authorities reported.

Police, Gang Clashes Make for Bloody July in El Salvador

Authorities said eight alleged gang members died on July 7 in reported shootouts with police, La Prensa Grafica reported. The paper quoted National Civil Police (Policia Nacional Civil – PNC) Director Howard Cotto as saying 4 armed individuals were killed after allegedly trying to ambush police in Ilobasco, about 50 kms northeast of the capital, San Salvador. The police reported that they recovered a 12-gauge shotgun and several 9mm pistols at the scene.

The Attorney General’s Office said three more people identified as gang members were killed later the same day in a shootout in La Paz, southeast of the capital, La Prensa Grafica reported. The paper quoted Attorney General Douglas Meléndez as cautioning the security forces to avoid “turning El Salvador into the Wild West.” He said so far this year 183 people had died in confrontations with law enforcement.

Panama honorary consul found dead in car in El Salvador

Panama’s honorary consul in El Salvador was found dead with a gunshot to the head Thursday, police said, in a car parked in the west of the capital.

The honorary consul, Carlos Armando Lemus, was a Salvadoran citizen and held diplomatic posts for two decades. Police said they have opened an investigation.
