Several policemen were shot and possibly killed during an attack by Niger Delta militants on the Igando suburb of Lagos. The attackers arrived by boat early in the morning on Tuesday and fighting seems to have ended several hours later, following considerable looting and some gun battles. Tanks were deployed and ‘normalcy has been restored to the area‘, but no arrests have been made.

Nigeria: Again, Militants Attack Lagos Community

Suspected militants yesterday raided Fatoki, Obadore and Egan, in Igando area of Lagos, carting away valuables.

The attack was immediately followed by a shootout between the suspected militants and policemen from the Igando Police Division.

The area under attack is about five minutes away from Iba town, where the monarch, the Oniba of Iba, Oba Yushau Goriola Oseni, was kidnapped penultimate Sunday.

Pandemonium as Niger Delta militants invade Lagos community

A resident who did not want his name mentioned said the militants stormed the area and started killing people.

He sent through a WhatsApp message that; “Please help us call emergency lines right now, Ewedogbo area of Igando, LASU Road is a theatre of war, Niger Delta militants are killing people right now, no one can call or go out, I am an eye witness, please, help us spread the information.” The message was reportedly sent around 7am.

He said no one could come out of their houses as the gunmen occupied the streets breaking into people’s houses at will. It was learnt that some policemen who had stormed the area at the time the militants wreaked havoc, ran back to mobilise.

Lagos militant attack update: Soldiers combat militants

The ongoing shootout, which has left three policemen injured, has caused residents of Igando, especially those around Ikejobi Avenue, Ewedogbon Bus Stop to flee their homes or hide indoors.

Two Rapid Response Squad armoured tanks are involved in the gun battle with more than 200 residents on the road with security operatives.

News24 earlier reported that several people were feared killed when suspected Niger Delta militants attacked the Igando area of Lagos state.

Militants invade community, 3 policemen shot in gun battle

The gunmen were said to have stormed the community around 6a.m through the waterways behind the Pacific Estate, Ikejiobi Avenue, Ewedogbon – they looted shops in the estate.

The police officers swung into action shortly after the incident was reported. One of them was shot in the head during the shootout but survived the attack, report said.

It was also reported that some of the residents, who were earlier abducted by the militants, escaped during the shootout.
