It has been reported that the bodies of five Malian soldiers have been found in or near a river, several days after they went missing in a clash with Ansar Dine militants near Tenenkou. Ansar Dine claimed at the weekend that it had taken the five soldiers hostage, though it is not yet clear what really happened.

5 Malian soldiers missing after clashes with rebels

Ansar Dine later claimed in a statement that one of its members and several Malian soldiers were killed and many others injured.

However, a Malian security source would only confirm to Anadolu Agency that five soldiers were still missing, without specifying whether they had been captured by the rebel group.

Ousmane Cisse, a local official, told Anadolu Agency that a lieutenant was among the five soldiers reported missing.

Five Malian soldiers found drowned after Islamist attack

Four of the soldiers were found near Tenenkou on Tuesday and a fifth near the town of Mopti, about 75 km (50 miles) away on Wednesday, army spokesman Souleymane Maiga said.

The soldiers were reported missing after an attack claimed by Islamist group Ansar Dine near the village of Tenenkou on Sunday, Maiga said.
