Hugo Rubén Castellanos Jiménez, the director of Miss World Mexico, was abducted by gunmen from a roadblock in Sinaloa in the early hours of Sunday. Mr Castellanos had crowned the new Miss Sinaloa on Saturday evening. His body was found several hours after his abduction – the Washington Post piece below has a relatively detailed account of the what happened.

The director of the Miss World pageant in Mexico, Hugo Ruben Castellanos, has been killed in the city of Culiacan in north-eastern Sinaloa state.

Mr Castellanos was abducted along with two other people from a bar early on Sunday, just hours after he crowned the winner of the Miss Sinaloa contest.

The two other people were later freed but Mr Castellanos’ body was found in a stolen car riddled with bullet holes.

Mexico Miss World pageant director shot dead in targeted attack

Castellanos was the intended target of the planned attack, according to authorities, who have discarded robbery as a motive after a substantial quantity of cash was recovered at the scene. But all other lines of inquiry remain open – including possible links to the beauty pageant – according to the Sinaloa’s chief prosecutor.

The attack took place in the state capital, Culiacan, just hours after Castellanos awarded Melissa Carolina Lizárraga the Miss Sinaloa crown.

Miss World Mexico pageant director abducted, shot dead in ‘targeted’ Sinaloa attack

He had left the party about 3:40 a.m. Sunday to eat dinner with three friends at a downtown restaurant, according to local media reports. While driving to dinner, their Jeep was flagged down at a road checkpoint by two hooded men brandishing large guns.

“Get out,” the hooded men ordered Castellanos’ friends, La Pared Noticias reports.
