On Thursday morning a boat carrying tourists from Bali to Gili Trawangan in Indonesia exploded, killing two passengers and wounded several more.

Bali tourist ferry explosion kills German tourist

A German woman has been killed in an explosion on a ferry carrying 35 tourists between the Indonesian resort islands of Bali and Lombok.

Up to 20 people were injured, including one passenger whose feet were blown off in the blast. The injured passengers included nationals from Portugal, Germany, Australia, South Korea and Britain, according to preliminary information from the police.

Bali tourist boat blast kills 2 foreigners, injures 18

Sudarso said he believed a malfunctioning battery near the fuel tank may have caused the accident.

“Based on the testimony (from passengers) and from what I saw at the scene, the explosion came from the fuel tank,” he said.

“Above it was a battery, maybe there was a short circuit that affected the fuel tank.”

Gili fast boat explodes, foreign passengers injured, possible death: reports

The Gili Cat II, which had 35 foreign tourists and crew aboard, exploded when heading from Bali to Gili Trawangan on Thursday at around 9:35 am, according to local reports. 

The boat was just 200 meters out from the Bali port of Padang Bai when it suddenly exploded.
