On Tuesday morning a convoy carrying President Duterte’s advance party was hit by an explosion, leaving nine people injured. The Presidential Security Group and military were preparing for President Duterte’s visit to Marawi City – it is not yet clear if the trip will go head. An investigation into the group responsible for the attack is underway.

Explosion in the Philippines Injures at Least Seven of President Duterte’s Advance Party

At least seven members of President Duterte’s security group and two military troops were wounded when a bomb exploded in Marawi City on the Philippines’ southern island of Mindanao Tuesday.

Two of the injured are in a critical condition, according to CNN Philippines. Duterte had been scheduled to visit Marawi on Wednesday and the wounded were part of his advance party convoy.

The authorities, Aquino said, have yet to determine whether the attack was targeted at Duterte or in retaliation to the current military campaign against the Maute militant group in Lanao del Sur.

Aquino also declined to comment whether the explosion would affect Duterte’s visit to the city but said the PSG is “well-trained and prepared to ensure the safety of the President”, as quoted by GMA News.
