Earlier this week, a bodyboarder died following a shark attack in the waters off Reunion Island. Alexandre Naussance had previously worked as a shark spotter and was bodyboarding in an area where water activities are banned.

Man dies in shark attack off Reunion Island after ignoring danger warnings

Alexandre Naussance, 26, who was once employed as a shark spotter by a surfing association, was attacked while bodyboarding off the northeast coast of the French territory in the Indian Ocean.

He was pulled out of the water by fishermen but pronounced dead after the animal bit through a major artery in his leg.

It took place in a zone where water activities were banned. Fishermen told reporters they warned the bodyboarders that sharks were in the area.

Local authorities issued a statement urging members of the public to observe prohibitions in force.

This is the 20th shark attack – eight of which have been fatal – off Reunion since 2011. The island is part of France and has a population of almost 850,000.
