Late last week three Save the Children aid workers were abducted by gunmen near Beledweyne in central Somalia. They were due to be released on Friday, but it is unclear whether this happened or not.

Somalia: Three Save the Children Staff Abducted

Three staff working for the international aid agency Save The Children were on Thursday taken hostage by Alshabaab outside Beledweyne in central Somalia. The three are all Somali nationals and were abducted while on a field trip near Beledweyne where they are based.

“They were abducted by Alshabaab militants” a relative of one of the three told Radio Dalsan.

4 Save the Children staff kidnapped in central Somalia

“We can confirm that three Somali Save the Children workers and their driver were abducted by al-Shabaab gunmen on Thursday evening and they were transported to Halgan district,” Food-ade said.

“One aid worker escaped; clan elders in the region are now working for the release of the rest of the aid workers from al-Shabaab,” he added.

A senior Save the Children aid worker also confirmed the incident to Anadolu Agency on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media.
