An Italian woman has been killed and her husband is in hospital in Mombasa after they were attacked at their village in Kikambala, a tourist town about up the coast from Mombasa. Italian authorities have reportedly opened an investigation, while Kenyan police have a suspect in custody.

Italy investigates murder of Italian woman in Kenya

Rome prosecutors have opened an investigation after an Italian woman was killed and her husband injured during an attack at their Kenya home on Sunday morning.

Maria Laura Satta, 71, and Luigi Scassellati, 72, from the northern Italian city of Cremona, were attacked with a machete at their villa in Kikambala, a tourist resort near Mombasa.

Coast detectives hunt gang that killed Italian tourist, injured husband

Preliminary investigations indicated the gang was armed with crude weapons.

Maria died at the scene while Luigi is in critical condition at Mombasa Hospital.

The Star established the two are from Cremona in Northern Italy and that they arrived on July 12 on three-month visas. They were to leave on October 15.
