On Wednesday, an employee of the US Embassy in Caracas was released unharmed, two days after he was kidnapped. The Venezuelan security guard was abducted while patrolling with a colleague near the embassy on Monday night. His colleague was not taken. A ransom of $30,000 USD was demanded, but reportedly it was not paid.

The security situation in Venezuela remains precarious, as the political stand off between President Maduro and the opposition continues. Kidnappings remain a very real risk, for both visitors and local nationals.
