Tropical Storm Mekunu turned in to a category 1 cyclone as it travelled across Socotra towards Oman. Flooding, high winds, structural damage and evacuations are expected in Yemen and Oman, and the storm cycle is likely to impact on Maharashtra in India as well. The cyclone is expected to make landfall in the next 24 hours.

Salalah’s airport – the second largest in Oman – has been shut down for 24 hours while the storm passes.

The Canadian Government issued a travel warning

The cyclone is likely to bring excessive rainfall and violent winds. It may cause flash flooding and landslides and could severely disrupt the following essential services:

  • transportation
  • power distribution
  • water and food supply
  • telecommunications networks
  • emergency services
  • medical care;

Avoid any unnecessary travel through the affected areas. If you reside in the affected areas, you should exercise caution, monitor local news and weather reports, and follow the instructions of local authorities.
