From the US Embassy in Peru

Location: Pan-American Highway Between Talara and Tumbes, Peru

Event: The U.S. Embassy in Lima has received reports from Peruvian authorities regarding a protest by fishing industry workers and others blocking all traffic on the Pan-American Highway from Talara to Tumbes, between Kilometer 220 and Kilometer 227 in northern Peru.  The protest is against a decree by the former President of Peru authorizing oil exploration in the area. Local authorities are negotiating with protestors, but all traffic, including buses, cars, and trucks, remains stopped.  There is currently no information regarding when this protest may end.  U.S. citizens are urged to educate themselves about these protests prior to traveling into and through the area by visiting the iPeru website at https://www.peru.travel/es-lat/iperu.aspx, or by telephone at +511-574-8000.
