On Friday morning, three British journalists were detained for eight hours in Venezuela. Cameraman and editor Barney Green, correspondent Dan Rivers and producer Laura Saravia, an Argentine-British dual national, work for the British news outlet ITN. Their arrest came at the end of a three day trip to Venezuela.
The Latin American Herald Tribune reports that they ‘were arrested by the National Guard at the Paraguachon border crossing in Zulia as they tried to leave for Colombia and posteriorly remanded to the custody of SEBIN, the domestic intelligence service.‘
Their security team also arrested – it is unclear if they have since been released.
Venezuela is currently experience widespread shortages of food, medicine and other basic supplies, due to political failures. Large numbers of people are leaving the country, and crime and unrest have increased in recent years.
