Gel Eye Mask

A few months ago, I picked up a mask like this one. Unlike other eye masks I’ve owned in the past, this is something I seek out when my eyes are aching. Perfect to help jetlag recovery – put in some hydrating eye drops and then cover your face with this for 15 minutes of recharging. (I store mine in the fridge in a ziplock bag.)

Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Headphones

I would love to pretend I’m an endlessly prepared and chic traveller, but realistically I’m not. However, these headphone helped cut down on the amount of wires cluttering up my seat and causing a general hazard on a recent flight. Decent sound quality, comfy to wear, and a great way to listen to podcasts or music when doing daily life. Will let the other reviews convince you more.

Travel pillow

Infinity scarf meets pillow… Sounds intriguing. This has been on my wish list for a long, long time as I’m on my endless search for a travel pillow that enables more than an uncomfortable nap on the plane.

You will need to remember to put this in your checked  luggage, but this little doodad packs a lot of punch. Two kinds of pliers, screwdrivers, file, bottle opener, scissors, a blade and more – handy tool for your pocket on adventures.

(You should also check what the local laws are regarding carrying tools like this. It will vary from place to place.)

Sturdy duffel bag

A robust, expanding duffel bag that will pack down when not in use is very useful. A friend has one like this and he swears by it. Says it helps with sprinting through airports and train stations, can fit a lot in and isn’t embarrassing to carry in to the office for meetings on a work trip.

Large scarf

A giant, super-soft scarf that doubles up as a blanket? Why yes, please.

I have several scarves like this and they make travelling much more comfortable. They keep you warm on drafty trains and planes, and are good for keeping out the chill in the evenings.

While they are not as fancy as cashmere or wool, they are much more robust and easier to wash (and a fraction of the price). If you are crossing continents and cities, and dealing with travel environments where it is best to not think about the germs and grossness, having something you can shove in a washing machine is great.

Trying to find a pharmacy when you’re not feeling great and have a language barrier to deal with is not the easiest thing in the world. Save yourself from the hassle by making sure you have a well-stocked first aid kit – use something like this as your starting point!
