Two French journalists investigating the sand mafia – members of whom are can be linked to local power brokers – have been labelled as spies. When considering the posters that were put up by local political party denouncing the pair and warning people to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour, it is worth remembering recent cases of vigilante violence against people suspected of crimes. These incidents have often been fueled by rumours on social media.
