Further rallies are due to take place across Iran today, following on protests and counter-protests that started on the 28th of December in Mashhad.

Protests initially started in response inflation and economic issues, before morphine into a wider protest of the economic and political situation in Iran.

Blame and conspiracy theories have been bandied around as the authorities tried to damp down the protests and the world tried to find an appropriate response. We have pulled together key headlines and articles for you.

European arrested?

It was reported earlier in the week that a European citizen was detained in Borujerd, with the head of the local judiciary saying that a “European citizen was arrested in Borujerd county … The person had been trained by European intelligence services and was leading the rioters.” This has since been clarified by an official – the individual was born in Borujerd, but now lives in Europe, and was arrested when filming protests.
