Mount Ulawun, on the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea, started erupting this morning and evacuations of the surrounding area are underway. The ash plume reached heights of 13km and the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre has issued a ‘red’ warning for airlines. Flight disruption and cancellations are expected – if you are due to cross this airspace, check your flight status with your airline before heading to the airport.
